Summer Camp Update

Troop 221,

Today merit badge registration opened for our week at Camp Buffalo Bill. Information in this email is divided by patrol, and there is general information at the end.
For Jaguars, Pythons and TFCs:
As usual, we were able to get most of what we wanted, but not all. Registration philosophy follows for those detail-oriented folks. For others looking to cut to the chase, the results are attached in two documents, the first of which is an excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has three tabs:
  1. Tab 1: The registration – This is what is in the system
  2. Tab 2: Your first choice per the sign up (and any adjustments)
  3. Tab 3: Your second choices per the sign up
There is another PDF attachment that includes individual registration by scout. I recommend reviewing this document because it includes specific information about requirements for individual classes (fees, clothing, supplies, etc). If you are interested in changes, here is a link to the summer camp web page.  At the bottom on the right side is a list of links to “Attachments”, including “class attendance counts”.  You can see the latest print out for class attendance in Week 2 to check availability for any interests you might have. Please note, however, that the printout is static and availability subject to change.

For Phoenix, Greyhounds, Panthers, and Thunderbirds
There is a separate PDF attached for patrols participating in the high adventure leadership programs.  Please verify that your registration is accurate.
For ALL
We did not hear from a few of you on t-shirt sizes, so Scoutmaster Day has assigned sizes where needed. #BePrepared
We’ll have our normal summer camp process at the camp launch – where we hand out maps/schedules, adult “bankers” collect cash, collect medicine and verify any medical forms needed, distribute t-shirts, and go over any last minute details before taking photos and loading the bus.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 214-686-5343.  I’ll be finalizing the schedule for printing by the end of May, so please let me know if any change requests regarding merit badges before May 15th.
Finally, many thanks to Team Summer Camp: Jason Spears and Trevor Liang for helping coordinate the registration and payments, and Jennifer Henry for coordinating t-shirts and Kristen Badowsi for accoutrements. Troop 221 is amazing and fun because of people like you.
We have 41 scouts and 20 adults attending, so it will undoubtedly be a memorable trip for all.
Sincerely,
Christina Day
221 Summer Camp Coordinator
Summer Camp Merit Badge Registration Philosophy Detail:
  • Work down the registration sheet by patrol, working from oldest to youngest.  This is because younger scouts have more time to get additional merit badges.  Older scouts may need specific badges to advance in rank, therefore, have scheduling priority.
  • Registration is done in order of sign-up within the patrols, so whoever signs up first gets the best shot at getting their top picks. Sometimes this can be adjusted if we know that a specific merit badge has very limited spots and is in high demand compared to others (i.e. typically, this is done for C.O.P.E. for rising sophmores). We will try to register those classes first despite other considerations.
  • If classes have shifted in availability (as does happen) or are already full, other considerations include:
    • Modifying the time slots to still get the classes a scout wants but in a different order
    • Changing to a class on the 2nd choice list
    • Looking at sign-up patterns, particularly within a scout’s patrol, to try and keep scouts together when possible
    • Using TM Web to verify any choices outside registration are not duplicating MB already attained.
    • Substituting another Eagle Required MB if an Eagle Required badge was desired but not available
    • Considering when a class may be most effective or fun (fishing in the morning when the fish may be more likely to bite, or swimming in the afternoon when it is warmer)
    • Considering patterns of interest to match general interest with availability in the schedule if other options fail or registration information is limited.
